Over the years, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields have become the backbone of innovation and progress in our increasingly digital world. In fact, despite being half the population, women constitute only 26% of the tech workforce, with Latina, Black and Indigenous women representing less than 10%. Barriers for Girl Students in Tech
Despite the increasing recognition of the importance of gender diversity in tech, girls still encounter several barriers that keep them from pursuing these fields, including:
Gender bias: Disappointingly, stereotypes and gender biases persist, creating a hostile work environment within tech fields that discourages girls from expressing their interests in those subjects.
Lack of confidence: Social expectations and preconceived notions about gender roles can lead to self-doubt and a lack of confidence among girls, hindering their pursuit of tech education and careers.
Lack of representation: When girls don’t see women role models and mentors in tech, it becomes harder for them to envision themselves in similar roles. Also, the underrepresentation of women in tech textbooks and curriculum materials reinforces the idea that these fields are primarily for men, perpetuating a cycle of fewer girls pursuing tech.

Making Tech More Inclusive for Girl Students
Creating a more inclusive environment for girls requires a multi-faceted approach involving tech educators, parents, policymakers and the community.

Encouraging parental support: Parents play a crucial role in shaping a child’s interests and career choices. Encouraging girls to explore tech subjects and providing them with the necessary support and resources can have a lasting impact on their confidence and educational interests.
Industry collaboration: Collaboration between educational institutions and industries can create internships, workshops and tech programs that expose girls to real-world applications of STEM early on in their education. This hands-on experience can also help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation.
Policy initiatives: Governments and educational authorities should advance policies that promote gender diversity in tech education and careers. This could include offering scholarships, creating safe spaces for girls to express their interests in tech and proactively addressing discrimination and bias.
